The fonds consists of selections relating to Canada copied from the Library and Archives of the Royal Commonwealth Society. The selections include records of the Royal Colonial Institute itself (predecessor to the Royal Commonwealth Society), and selections from the manuscript holdings acquired by the Library over the years from external sources. Some recurring themes in the selections are emigration from the United Kingdom, the settlement of Canada, Imperial unity, Newfoundland and the fisheries, and the First World War. The fonds is on microfilm reels A-1183 to A-1187.

Royal Commonwealth Society : The Royal Commonwealth Society was created in 1868 in London, England and originally called the Colonial Society, with the objective of promoting Imperial unity, colonial development, and awareness of colonial issues. Its name was changed in 1870 to the Royal Colonial Institute, in 1929 to the Royal Empire Society, and again in 1958 to the Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS), to reflect the changing nature of the British Empire and Commonwealth. Over the course of its history the Society amassed an outstanding library of printed material, manuscripts and photographs relating to the Empire and Commonwealth, and it maintained Commonwealth House in London. A financial crisis in the 1980s eventually forced it to close Commonwealth House in 1991 and undertake a public fundraising campaign to save the library from being broken up. It ultimately transferred the library en bloc to the University of Cambridge Library. The Society retrenched fiscally and opened the refurbished Commonwealth Club in 1998, a combined hotel and conference centre to serve as central meeting place for Commonwealth-related and multicultural activities in London. Today, the Society is a pan-Commonwealth Non-Governmental Organization with over 10,000 members around the world. It organizes conferences, lectures, and educational projects; briefs the press and Parliament on Commonwealth issues; liaises with other international NGOs; promotes the celebration of Commonwealth Day; and organizes other social and cultural events.

Location of originals note:

The originals were held by the Library of the Royal Commonwealth Society at the time of microfilming in 1978. Due to financial difficulties the Society transferred its library to the University of Cambridge Library in 1991.
