- Diploma of Graduation from the Royal Military College of Canada at Kingston, Ont. conferred on G. H. Hees. Dated 21 Aug. 1931. Signed by the Staff Adjutant and the Commandant of R. M. College. 1 p. Mounted on cardboard. (Box 1).

- Honorary Degree (in Latin) conferred on George Harris Hees by Waterloo University College (H. M. Axford, President). Degree dated 1961. With biographical sketch on Hees signed by H. M. Axford. 2 p. In blue cardboard folder. (Box 1).

- Letters Patent appointing George Hees Minister of Transport. Great Seal of Canada is affixed. Dated 21 June 1957 and recorded 11 Sept. 1957. Signed by the Governor General of Canada, the Secretary of State of Canada, the Attorney General of Canada and a representative of the Deputy Registrar General of Canada. 1 p. (Box 6).

Hees, George Harris, 1910-1996 : George Harris Hees was born in Toronto, Ont. on 17 June 1910, the son of Harris Lincoln Hees and Mabel Good. He attended Trinity College in Port Hope, Ont., the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ont., the University of Toronto and Cambridge University. A Toronto businessman, Hees was also a linebacker for the Toronto Argonauts. He married Mabel Dunlop on 30 June 1934. During the Second World War, Hees served overseas as Brigade Major in the 5th Infantry Brigade. In 1945, he ran unsuccessfully in the federal general election for Spadina (Toronto). He was elected to Parliament as a Progressive Conservative MP for Broadview (Toronto) in 1950, and was re-elected in 1953, 1957, 1958 and 1963. Hees was elected national party president in 1953. He was appointed Minister of Transport in 1957, a position he held until 1960 when he became Minister of Trade and Commerce. Hees resigned in 1963 after he was linked to the Gerda Munsinger affair. After having had a falling out with Diefenbaker, Hees did not stand for election in 1963. During his time away from Parliament, Hees was President of the Montreal World Fair in 1964 and President of the Montreal and Canadian Stock Exchanges from 1964 until his re-election in 1965 as MP for Northumberland (Ont.). Hees ran unsuccessfully for the Tory leadership in 1967. He was appointed Minister of Veterans Affairs by Brian Mulroney in 1984,and in 1987 he received an additional portfolio as Minister of State for Senior Citizens. Hees retired from politics prior to the 1988 general election and was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1989. He died in Toronto on 10 June 1996.
