The collection consists of three series: research files on Canadian sculptors created by Lawrence Hayward during the 1960s and 1970s as part of the Hayward Inventory of Canadian Sculptors; other research material collected by Hayward on Canadian art; and records relating to the Canadian artist Robert Gagen and to the Ontario Society of Artists.

Hayward, Lawrence, 1930- : Lawrence Hayward was born in Midland, Ontario, in 1930 and was educated at the Central Technical School in Toronto, where he studied with the sculptor Elizabeth Wyn Wood. After furthering his studies in the United States, Hayward returned to Canada to work as a masseur and artist. In 1963, he began to prepare an inventory of the work of the sculptors Frances Loring and Florence Wyle, who were his neighbours in Toronto. This project developed into an inventory of the work of a number of Canadian sculptors born between 1840 and 1910.
