Interview by Jim Green of Billy Boyd, former member of the Canadian Seamen's Union (CSU). Boyd, who first shipped out on the Great Lakes vessels in 1936 as a fireman, describes the arduous work of the fireman on the coal-fired ships. He recalls working two six-hour shifts in 24 hours, seven days a week for $35 a month. He also describes the lake boats that carried mainly grain and coal and the poor working and living conditions aboard the Canadian Steamship Lines vessels. Boyd talks about the lake boats passing through the Great Lake canals where seamen walked for miles along the canal edges guiding the boats through with ropes. Other topics include: the rats aboard the grain ships; confrontations between CSU strikers and strikebreakers; the wage and work improvements won by the CSU; seamen celebrating after being paid off; and other jobs he has done on ships. He concludes with his voyage aboard the Algonguin Park to Columbo, Ceylon, when the crew was charged with mutiny and his recollections of other seamen he knew.
