Interview by Jim Green of Gerry McCullough, former member of the Canadian Seamen's Union (CSU). McCullough, who first switched from a lake vessel to a deep-sea vessel in 1944 at the age of 16, talks about the Canadian Merchant Marine Manning Pool located in a converted hotel where seamen were lodged, trained and hired as crew members. He describes how the pool functioned, the benefits the seamen received and the regulations the seamen were bound by under the terms of the Canada Shipping Act. Other topics include a description of the badge and uniform of the Merchant Marine, the youthfulness of the merchant seamen and the disparity in the wages paid to British, American and Canadian seamen. He also elaborates on the relationship between merchant seamen and the regular Armed Forces, and on details of the 1949 CSU strike and the SS Suntan, a camp near Port Alfred, Quebec, established by the CSU to co-ordinate strike action and aid destitute strikers, and finally, his feelings as the 1949 strike failed and the Seafarers International Union ultimately triumphed after a long and bitter battle with the vanquished CSU.
