Record of the arrival of American troops on the Western Front. Animated and actuality footage of the US activities in the Marne salient, 1918.~American troops write letters, gamble with dice, pick lice and wash their feet. Cuts to activities that pre-date the arrival of U.S. forces. French soldiers bring up guns, British bring forward reserves, heavy mortars are fired. The "allies were fighting with their backs to the wall". Foch and Pershing pose. U.S. troops then embark for overseas. Black soldiers dance on the deck of the troop ship. View of the troop ship's convoy. A u-boat attacks, men don life-belts and man the life-boats. Y-gun throws up smoke screen allowing convoy to escape. Troops disembark and board troop trains. At a train stop two uniformed women give the soldiers soup. Sequence on American troops in Contigny, Chateau Thierry and Belleau Woods. Shots of shelling, Americans advancing and German prisoners. Interspersed with animated maps of American movements in the Marne salient. <13mn 21s>
