Banff School of Fine Arts : The Walter Phillips Gallery operates under the jurisdiction of the Media and Visual Arts Department at The Banff Centre for the Arts (formerly known as the Banff School of Fine Arts). The Banff Centre for the Arts was etablished in 1935 or 1936 under the joint direction of the University of Alberta, Dept. of Extension, and the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art (Alberta). In 1978, the Centre officially changed its name to the Banff Centre for Continuing Education. The Banff Centre for Continuing Education is comprised of four divisions including the Centre for the Arts, the Centre for Management and the Centre for Conferences, all of which use various forms of names. It has evolved into a small but dynamic gallery that has become known for a contemporary art program that champions curatorial innovation and is committed to emerging forms of art including video and performance.
