Description:

This series examines a new technique, X-Ray Television Fluroscopy, which enables direct observation of the flow characteristics of molten metal within closed mould systems. Part one looks at the technique to study the flow of steel in gating systems for horizontal castings.~ The X-Ray technique is explained with graphics and illustration ( the only animation in the film). The X-Rays of the flows are recorded on film and videotape. Problems encountered with the flow within various designs of the moulds are observed, adjustments are made and subsequent flows are analysed.~ Ultimately the best design to accomodate the flow is selected, in this case the unpressurized gating ratio of 1:2:2 is preferred. <27mn 43s>

1. The French series title is OBSERVATION DIRECTE DE L'ÈCOULEMENT D'ACIER UN FUSION DANS DES MOULES EN SABLE.~2. Although not verified, it appears the film was produced for the Metals Technology Laboratories, at the time known as the Physical Metallurgy Research Laboratories, from footage shot in the laboratories of Energy, Mines and Resources.~3. X-RAY GATING STUDY FILMS # 707 was a working title for these films.~4. See also, ISN 185711 for Part Two.~5. This title was input to fulfill a public service request committed to before this collection was rendered off limits. Therefore, the holdings listed here may or may not be complete since the finding aid for this collection is yet to be organized.
