The lifestyle of the people of Tabatière, a village on the shore of the St. Lawrence, and their dependence on the seal hunt is detailed.~Tabatière consists of 12 families named Robertson whose Scottish ancestors bought the seal fishing rights for the area in 1820, equipment included. For two weeks each winter this cod fishing village turns to seal fishing as the annual migration of Greenland seals passes through.~The fishermen are shown anticipating the first sightings of the seals, hoping for a turn in the weather and the cracking of the winter ice. The nets are set and the seals shown becoming entrapped. The dead seals are pulled aboard the boats as the nets are hauled in by the fishermen. Dog teams are used to pull sleds that carry the seals from the boats back to the village. Known for their ferocious and unreliable nature, the dogs are not well-liked by the fishermen. "If asked, every man says he would destroy all his dogs were they not indispensible to him."~The skinning, cutting and cooking of blubber, skimming of the oil and preparation of white skin coats are shown. A total of 400 Greenland seals are divided between 10 families and 100 dogs, a stark contrast to the 3000 seals caught between Christmas and the New Year in seasons long past. The importance of the seal migration to the survival of this village is evident. <29mn 25s>
