The photographs were taken for a variety of clients and a variety of purposes although the majority were claimed to have been taken for the Canadian Magazine and were used as part of its editorial content in the period of about 1968 - 1975. They show food prepared for serving in a variety of manners but inherently reflect the sort of food which was commonly prepared in Canadian kitchens in the period. The photographs also reflect the genre of food photography in a period of change: the earlier fashion for food presentation had given way to a greater emphasis on design in presentation and placement.

All of the images are of food: individual sorts of food (cheeses, cakes, meats, fruits, vegetables); the presentation of food in appetizing fashion; showing food in various guises (as preserves, as the original material for recipes -- for example, eggs and milk); and viewing the presentations from various angles and points of view .

Webber, Ray, 1933- : Mr. Webber was born 19 January 1933 in London, England. He had an early interest in photography and began his career working at a commercial studio, learning all aspects of the business. He was then employed by the Ambassador magazine (a British fashion magazine) as assistant to their photographer.

He emigrated to Canada in 1954 and was employed by Maclean-Hunter and worked as staff photographer for Mayfair Magazine, Canadian Homes and Gardens, and Chatelaine. In 1957 he joined Toronto editorial and advertising photographer John Sebert [whose collection was acquired by the National Archives in 1997], and engaged in ineditorial and advertising photography.

In 1968 Webber, Clive Webster, Derek Case and Paul Newberry set up a working association known as Format. Webber specialized in still life photography which included food photography for the Canadian Magazine and many food companies. He also photographed and designed fifteen postage stamps for Canada Post.

In 1976 he moved with his wife, anthropologist Alika Podolinsky Webber, to the West Coast. He documented her work as well as the material culture of the people she worked with in all areas of Canada. Other clients were Parks Canada, National Film Board, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, The Canadian Canoe Museum, Newfoundland Museum, Musée de la Civilisation, Canadian Museum of Civilization and the Bata Shoe Museum.

A personal ongoing project is the documentation of the rural post offices of Canada. Many of these photographs are in the collection of the Postal Museum in Ottawa.
