The series largely consists of chronologically arranged correspondence exchanged by Lochnan and his wife, Barbara, comprising some 500 letters dating from 1941, before their marriage (when Barbara Duminy worked for British Intelligence in New York), to 1975 (predominant 1941-1953). In general, the letters discuss Carl Lochnan's career and travel, their friends and family, books they have read, theatre, and social events. The letters provide an unusually intimate portrait of a marriage. Also included is a small amount of correspondence each received from family and friends mainly during the 1940s, as well as letters of condolence Carl Lochnan received when his wife died in 1982. There is, as well, one sub-series of Posthumous material.
