Qantas : Qantas, the Australian airline, began service in 1920, initially named Western Queensland Auto Aero Service Limited, then Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Service Limited (Q.A.N.T.A.S.). The airline began scheduled airmail service and passenger service in 1922. Qantas became part of Britain's Imperial Airways (later BOAC) routes in 1931, and was registered as Qantas Empire Airways Limited was in 1934, in which Imperial held shares as well. Qantas overseas passenger service began in 1935 with flights to Singapore, that would become part of Imperial Airways routes to the United Kingdom.

The Australian government acquired all remaining Qantas shares in 1947, effectively nationalizing the airline. In the post-war era Qantas resumed and expanded its overseas air service, and many of its domestic routes and services were taken over by Trans-Australia Airlines (TAA), in 1949. Qantas absorbed British Commonwealth Pacific Airlines in the 1950s, and in 1957 it acquired shareholdings in Malayan Airways, and bought Fiji Airways. The company opened its first hotel in 1966. In 1967 the company's name was changed to Qantas Airways Limited.

Qantas established a subsidiary: Australian-Asian Airlines, in 1990, to serve the increasing Asian market. In 1992 Qantas purchased the main domestic carrier Australian Airlines (formerly TAA), and the Australian government privatised the enlarged Qantas in 1993, beginning with a sale of 25% of the airline's shares to British Airways (formerly BOAC). The following year Qantas was merged with Australian Airlines. The 1990s saw the airline expand its domestic service, with four regional subsidiaries. Qantas website: , April 2001. 206900

Custodial history:

A gift from Qantas, via that company's airmail advisor R.H. Holmes, in 1973, to the National Postal Museum (accession number unknown). Later acquired by the Canadian Postal Archives (and initially included in accession 1989-565 DAP).
