The collection consists of postal covers, postage stamp die proofs and other philatelic records belonging to the Canadian Postal Archives. Many items have been purchased for the philatelic collection of the Canadian Postal Archives while some covers have been retained from incoming correspondance.

Canadian Postal Archives : The Canadian Postal Archives (CPA) of the National Archives of Canada is mandated to acquired and document Canada's philatelic heritage, and its collections are composed of postage stamps, related production materials, materials in various media (photographs, manuscripts, maps, posters, etc.) that are related to Canada's philatelic heritage, and a library collection on the history of the postal service and philately in Canada and around the world. Much of the library consists of gifts from the Royal Philatelic Society of Canada. The CPA originated with the National Postal Museum, which was once part of the Post Office Department, latterly as part of Corporate Communications, Canada Post Corporations. In 1988, part of the Museum's holdings, predominantly the philatelic records and the library, were transferred to the National Archives of Canada to become the Canadian Postal Archives. Other parts of the Museum's holdings, predominantly the artifacts, remained with the National Postal Museum which joined the Canadian Museum of Civilization the same year. The Canadian Postal Archives was part of the Documentary Art, Photography and Philatelic Records Section of the Visual and Sound Archives Division of the National Archives of Canada for many years, until a reorganization of the institution in 2000. Since that reorganization, the philatelic materials transferred from Canada Post have been the responsibility of the Government Records Branch, and the philatelic holdings originating with private sector collectors and dealers have been the responsibility of the Client Services and Access Branch.
