Canada. Canadian Army. Canadian Railway Troops. Battalion, 10th : The 256th Battalion, predecessor of the 10th Battalion Canadian Railway Troops (CRT), was organized in in January 1917 under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel W.A. McConnell. Its authorization was published in General Order 11 of 1 February 1917. The battalion mobilized at Toronto and Windsor, N.S., and recruited in Ontario and Nova Scotia. It was to be employed in special railway and bridge building projects.

The battalion embarked at Halifax on 28 March 1917 aboard MISSANABIE, disembarking in England on 6 April 1917. Its strength was 18 officers and 531 other ranks. The 256th Battalion was redesignated the 10th Battalion, Canadian Railway Troops on 30 May 1917. The battalion arrived in France on in June 1917 where it constructed and maintained light railways which were used for carrying communication and supplies to the lines and bringing back wounded. Its authorization was published in General Order 63 of 15 June 1917. The battalion demobilized at Toronto and was disbanded by General Order 196 of 1 November 1920. The 10th Battalion, CRT was perpetuated by the Algonquin Regiment.
