Series consists of files from two principal components of the institution: Deposit-Taking Institutions (DTI) and Insurance (DOI). The series includes files from the Direction Committee concerning large trends such as decisions relating to certain financial and insurance institutions. Also included are files relating to the dissolution, the union, and the constitution of various financial and insurance institutions.

When the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions was created in 1987 with the amalgamation of the Office of the Inspector General of Banks and the Department of Insurance, the central registry system was reorganized to accomodate this union. Since then, all components of the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions were integrated into a new classification system. The records in this series come from this new filing system.
