Series consists of files documenting correspondence and per capita tax payments from unions and municipal labour councils affiliated to the Union Label Trades Department, the department's executive meetings and conventions, requests for and distribution of union label materials, registration of union labels, the CLC's Union-Industries Show, and other aspects of the CLC's efforts to promote union label trades and services. Some files document the department prior to the 1956 merger, when it was part of the Trades and Labor Congress of Canada. The files contain correspondence, reports, minutes, convention records, contracts, promotional material, lists of exhibitors at shows, financial records, and other documents.

Canadian Labour Congress. Union Label Trades Dept : The Union Label Trades Department was established at the CLC's founding in 1956. It grew out of the Trades and Labor Congress of Canada's Trade Union Label Department. Its purpose was to promote, through the use of the union label, the demand for goods and services produced by union members. The union label was used by over fifty national and international affiliates of the CLC. Administration of the department was handled by a part-time secretary treasurer, and officers were elected at a biennial conventions. The Union Label Trades Department also organized the CLC's Union Industries Show, a series of labour-management trade fairs at which both unions and unionized employers presented displays of union-made products and services.

Certain files available as originals (container 681, folder 19, to container 682, folder 18) were microfilmed by the CLC as part of its records management programme. The microfilm version of these files was acquired by the National Archives separately from the originals; the microfilm version is available on reels H-906 and H-907. While the originals and microfilm correspond closely, researchers should not assume that they are identical.
