Series consists of papers relating to the transport of Black settlers from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Sierra Leone and the founding of the colony of which Clarkson became the first governor. Includes correspondence with Richard Bulkeley, Administrator of Nova Scotia; William Wilberforce; Rev. Thomas Clarkson, brother of John Clarkson; Thomas Peters; Matthew Clarkson; Joseph Hardcastle; Henry Thornton, chairman of the Sierra Leone Company; and Granville Sharp. Also includes tickets of land grant for emigrants, once they have reached Sierra Leone, 1791; advertisement, 1791, at Shelburne, Nova Scotia, from John Clarkson, agent for the Sierra Leone Company, seeking prospective emigrants; letter from Birch Town inhabitants regarding emigration; petition from Blacks for fresh beef. Includes letters on the unhappy state of the Blacks in Nova Scotia and general material on the abolition of slavery, reports from the Sierra Leone Company, and letters from Freetown, Sierra Leone. This material is located on microfilm reel A-1981.
