McLean was an active member of many associations dealing with Third World and Commonwealth problems, such as: African Leadership Forum; Association of West European Parliamentarians Against Apartheid, Parliamentarians Global Action, Partnership Africa-Canada and so on. He was also in contact with other governmental and non-governmental agencies promoting a response to the needs of various African Third World countries, such as Canadian Business Association of South Africa, Canadian Council of Churches Human Rights Committee, CUSO, North/South Institute, etc. These files - consisting of correspondence, agendas, reports, proceedings, notes, speeches, minutes, occasional print material and annotations - shed light on his very active work on behalf of Third World countries.
