McLean was a member of many international bodies , especially after he was named "Special Representative on South African and Commonwealth Affairs". The records in this sub-series consist of manuals, briefings, correspondence, some print material and reports concerning the following organizations - Canada-South Africa Co-operation, South African Educational Trust Fund, Oxfam, and Peace and Reconstruction. These records elucidate McLean's role in pressing forward Canada's very strong and ultimately successful anti-Apartheid policy regarding South Africa. The files document McLean's role as election observer in the 1994 general election in South Africa, as well as his participation in the Peace and Reconstruction Development of South Africa.
