Produced in 1914 by the eminent photographer Edward S. Curtis and released as IN THE LAND OF THE HEAD HUNTERS, this saga of romantic love and magic among the Kwakiutl of Vancouver Island was rescued from obscurity and restored from the original footage. In 1972 Professors Holm and Quimby corrected film defects and produced a complete sound track: the spoken parts, singing and music were produced with the aid of fifty Kwakiutl consultants.~The film's story is improbable, but its use of Kwakiutl to reenact traditional rituals and dance in the setting of a village is fascinating, ranking this film as an exceptional early work of ethnographic cinematography. The film is based on Curtis' ideas for a good film story about Indians before the coming of white man, but since the Kwakiutl had had contact with Europeans since the 1790s this was a difficult task. He worked with the members of the community and was able to reconstruct a good deal of Kwakiutl culture during the time when much of it was still intact.~In 1967 the film was shown to hundreds of Kwakiutl Indians on Vancouver Island and in five years a sound version was made, entirely in Kwakwala, the language of the Kwakiutl. <47mn>
