Series comprises economic, technical, and socio-economic feasibility reports commissioned by Scotia Coal Synfuels Project, and later by Scotia Synfuels Ltd. The reports were carried out by energy, chemical, engineering, financial, and environmental consultants, including Gulf Canada, Chevron, Bantrel/Bechel, Ontario-Ohio Synthetic Fuels Corporation, and the Royal Bank of Canada. Reports were also commissioned by the Nova Scotia government, and by several Nova Scotia municipal planning boards. The first file of the series is a SSL list of approximately 181 reports, giving date, title, author, and a five-word summary. Most of the listed reports are in this series; others are in the following binder series, some may be in the Eric Maki sub-series or in other series.

Most of the scientific reports are studies of coal-oil co-processing, or of other coal-liquification technologies, or of the upgrading of hydrocarbon-coal liquification. Financial reports are of the project's cost estimates and projections, including facilities, equipment, and technology. Naturally, ten boxes of about 181 reports on a wide range of scientific, technical, commercial, chemical, and material aspects of coal, petroleum, and oil production are difficult for non-experts to understand, appraise, and evaluate. At the same time, this series is central to the assertion of Scotia Synfuels Limited that the extraction of oil from Nova Scotian coal was scientifically possible, economically sound, and socially beneficial. Thus these records are central to the argument that SSL's goal was practical, feasible, and desirable.
