Series documents Gillespie's post-parliamentary business work as a manager, a consultant, and a director. These records cover the period that Gillespie was Chairman of Carling O'Keefe Ltd. (1980-1983); Director of Rothman's International Ltd. (1980-1983); Chairman of the Board of the National Westminster Bank of Canada (1980-1995); and Director of Uniroyal Ltd. (1982-1990); and principal of Alastair Gillespie and Associates Limited (1980ff). A few early files of the Scotia Coal Synfuels Project are also here. Many of these records are corporate, shareholder, and general correspondence, board memoranda, meeting minutes, reports, and financial statements or accounts. Some personal records of Gillespie's management of his own capital are here, particularly in the Alastair Gillespie and Associates Limited and Year-end statements and other finances sub-series. Other personal and private records are in the correspondence and blanket box sub-series

Most of these records were created and accumulated in Gillespie's home office. The structure of the series was not always apparent, and the nine sub-series here flow from the pattern of accumulation. Nevertheless, some of the sub-series, such as Natwest, and parts of some sub-series, such as the Petroferm records in the Alastair Gillespie and Associates Limited sub-series, were clearly distinct. The final three sub-series are both a range of personal and consulting issues, and are here as separate sub-series since they were maintained separately.
