Sub-series documents Gillespie's second term as minister, although a small block dates from his first tenure as minister. Most of the records are numerically coded correspondence from other departments, with some uncoded correspondence and subject files. The sub-series includes eight files (vol. 52, files 8 - 15) of 1978-1979 memoranda to Gillespie from Denis Hudon, Secretary, Ministry of State for Science and Technology, on various topics - nuclear energy, appointments, electrical cars (see also vol. 404, file 13), government programmes, funding for industrial research and development, MOSST finances, solar energy, automotive research and development, the Science Council of Canada, and specific cases at Foreign Investment Review Agency. Similar memoranda are in volume 336, files 13-16. Federal government cut-backs are illustrated in the records relating to funding problems within the Ministry of State for Science and Technology, budget reductions at research granting agencies, MOSST's efforts to get support for the Centres of Excellence, and the curtailing of government funding for industrial research and development.
