Sub-series consists of public crossing accidents index cards. Historically, public crossing accidents in Canada were documented on index cards. Kept up-to-date until about 1992, each index card lists the accident history of a public crossing that has had at least one accident since the early 1900's. There are approximately 24,000 public crossings in Canada, possibly as much as half of which have an accident history. Each card identifies the geographic location of the crossing, crossing reference number, National Transportation Agency/Canadian Transportation Commission file number, and occasionally, the date the crossing protection was upgraded. Each line entry on the card indicates an accident date, an accident ID number, the protection type at the time of the accident, number of casualties, and what struck what. These index cards constitute the essential documentation on the subject. In 1990, the newly created Transportation Safety Board (TSB) took over the safety aspect of transportation. Actual Crossing accident data going back to 1983 is recorded in TSB's automated system.

Custodial history:

These index cards were transferred to the Transportation Safety Board (RG156) when it was established in 1990, and they were eventually transferred to the Archives via the TSB. But since these records were created by the Canadian Transportation Commission, they have been included in the RG46 fonds.
