Jean Roberts worked as manager of Festival Canada, 1966-1967, before being appointed director of theatre for the newly built National Arts Centre in 1970-1977. Marigold Charlesworth became director of the NAC's Hexagon Company and both women directed plays for the NAC's theatre.

The series consists of three sub-series of textual records which document Jean Roberts' and Marigold Charlesworth's careers with the National Arts Centre. Both Roberts and Charlesworth interfiled personal and business correspondence and that arrangement has been maintained. Some of the publicity clippings were evidently ones sent to their families in Great Britain and later returned. Most of the files were created at the National Archives from unfiled material (original file titles, where they existed, are documented in the files). Also included is graphic material, comprising six publicity posters, and ground plans for the NAC Studio production of 'The Mandrake'.
