Fonds consists of a talk by Archibald Belaney (Grey Owl) originally recorded in the United Kingdom by the British Broadcasting Corporation during Belaney's tour in 1937. The fonds also contains many oral history interviews by historian Donald B. Smith and others with relatives, friends and acquaintances of Archibald Belaney in Britain and Canada. Some of the noteworthy recordings include interviews in French of residents of Cabano, Quebec, about their recollections of Grey Owl, friends who knew Belaney in Biscotasing, Ontario, George McCormick, Belaney's boyhood friend in Hastings, Sussex, Agnes Lalande, daughter of Grey Owl, individuals associated with Grey Owl's British tour in the 1920s, Keith Haddow, who worked with Grey Owl as a summer student forest ranger near Biscotasing in 1920, Cree elder John Tootoosis about own his life story and his blood brother relationship with Grey Owl and Ken Conibear, manager of Grey Owl's second British tour in 1937. These interviews were mostly recorded during the research phase for Smith's publication entitled, From the land of shadows : the making of Grey Owl. Fonds contains additional interviews with acquaintances of Chief Buffalo Child Long Lance and a film entitled, The trail : men against the snow.

Smith, Donald B., 1946- : Donald B. Smith was born in 1946 and obtained his Ph.D. in History at the University of Toronto. He has been a professor of Canadian History at the University of Calgary since 1974. His main research interests include Native peoples, the early Canadian West, French-Canadians in the Canadian West and the Canadian North. He also researched the lives of Archibald Belaney (Grey Owl) and Chief Buffalo Child Long Lance and conducted many oral history interviews for his books entitled, From the Land of Shadows: The Making of Grey Owl, Sacred Feathers: The Reverend Peter Jones (Kahkewaquonaby) and the Mississauga Indians and Long Lance: The True Story of an Impostor, two of which earned literary awards.

Professor Smith is also the author/editor of many historical publications such as Readings in Canadian history, the new provinces : Alberta and Saskatchewan, 1905-1980 and Le sauvage : the native people in Quebec historical writing on the heroic period (1534-1663) of New France. Custodial history:

The moving images were part of the Canadian Film Institute's (CFI) transfer to the National Archives of May 12, 1975. The CFI received the moving images from Donald B. Smith in 1971. The National Archives received the sound recordings from Donald B. Smith between 1972 and 1989.
