This accession consists of material dealing with the portrayal of women and minorities on CBC television. The first box consists of audio reels from two Portrayal of Women conferences that the CBC conducted in February, 1979 and June, 1980. The seminars featured presentations by CBC staff and others on matters relating to the status and role of women in radio and television programming. The tapes also include the ensuing discussions between the presenters and invited representatives of various womens' groups in Canada. The second box contains transcripts from the 1979 conference. The accession also includes letters of complaint by viewers regarding the portrayal of women on specific programs and broadcasts. Many of these letters arrived at the CBC on form letters distributed by Mediawatch, a Vancouver organization also known as the National Watch on Images of Women in the Media Inc.
In response to both the seminars and the letters of complaint, the CBC established an inventory of women professionals who would be available to comment on television and radio regarding scientific, technical and professional issues of the day. The accession includes both the completed inventories (for both English and French commentators) along with the application letters of individuals who desired to be included in the in the inventory.
This accession also includes other material dealing with the portrayal of women and minorities, such as the CBC Task Force on Equity group, CBC policy statements on stereotyping in the media, and the minutes of the ACTRA Visible Minority Steering Committee, among others.
Sound recordings of proceedings of two seminars held by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in 1979 and 1980 about the role and portrayal of women in broadcasting. The seminars feature presentations by CBC staff and others, as well as ensuing discussions between presenters and invited representatives of various women's groups.
