Community Planning Association of Canada : The Community Planning Association of Canada (CPAC) originated with a conference called by the Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) in 1946, to discuss the planning of community environments in Canada. The Association was established as a national voluntary organization "to foster public understanding of, and participation in, community planning in Canada". The national office was meant to serve as a pool of contemporary planning ideas for the regional divisions, to co-ordinate divisional programs and national activities, and to act as a liaison with government. The headquarters, located in Ottawa, also served as a national cooperative which reproduced planning concepts in terms that the majority of Canadians could find understandable.

Dependent on private and government funding, the CPAC suffered when government grants were cut back. In July 1978, lack of federal funding forced the closure of the national office. Nine provincial divisions, however, remain in operation.
