The collection comprises two paintings by Dominic Serres (1722-1793), "A View of the Jesuits College, Quebec City," 1760 and "A View of the Church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Victoire, Quebec City," 1760, both after on-the-spot drawings by Richard Short (fl. 1754-1766). Short was a naval officer serving under Vice-Admiral Saunders and present at the siege of Quebec. The other two paintings in this collection are by an unknown artist, painted ca. 1900 and are after paintings by Serres who in turn copied works by Samuel Scott (1702-1772), "The Defeat of the French Fireship Attack, 28 June 1759", and "The Defeat of the French Fireraft Attack, 28 July 1759." The print "Entrance into Halifax Harbour," 1803, is after Serres, engraved by John Wells and published by Joyce Gold. The photograph is of the painting by Serres "Destruction of the American fleet at Penobscot Bay, Aug. 14, 1779", which is at the National Martime Museum in London, England.

Serres, Dominic, 1722-1793 : Dominic Serres (born France 1722) came to England in 1758, where he pursued a career as an artist, becoming Marine Painter to the King in 1780. Serres perpared paintings after the drawings of Richard Short.

Serres collaborated with the British naval artist Richard Short (active 1735-1777) on at least three print sets, Serres executing paintings from Short's drawings, which were then engraved.

Serres died in London, England in 1793.

General note:

According to the Serres artist file, and the Scott artist file there are also two photographs of the Scott paintings in the collection.

Custodial history:

The two paintings: "A View of the Treasury and Jesuits College, Quebec City" and "A View of the Church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Victoire, Quebec City" were purchased by the Public Archives in 1933, and a label on the verso of one indicates that they came from one of the Townshend family houses in Norfolk, England. The two paintings: "The Defeat of the French Fireship Attack, 28 June 1759" and "The Defeat of the French Fireraft Attack, 28 July 1759" were purchased in 1931 from John Cusack, a Montreal art dealer, by Arthur Doughty and are copies by an unknown artist after Serres who in turn copied original versions by Samuel Scott. The print: "Entrance to Halifax Harbour" was acquired in 1951. The photographic copy of the painting "Destruction of the American Fleet at Penobscot Bay Aug. 14, 1779" was acquired before 1962.
