Oral history interview of Emile Bertrand and his wife Georgina of Fort Coulonge, Quebec, who talk about their ancestors who settled in the Ottawa Valley and his career as a lumberman. The Bertrands also talk about the legends of the "loup-garou" (werewolf), the "chasse-galerie" (witch canoe) and the "windigo" (a creature the Natives believed was responsible for the death of people who disappeared in the woods) - legends that were well known to the shantymen in the isolated lumber camps of the Valley. Turning to his career as a river-driver responsible for the smooth passage of the timber down the river, Bertrand recalls shooting the Rocher Fondu Rapids astride a log, bringing a frozen corpse out of the bush by sawing it in half, taking 25 days to break up a massive log jam on the Coulonge River and winning a trophy for the fastest boat to shoot the Deschenes Rapids on the Ottawa River. The Bertrands round out the interview by discussing some of the renowned characters of the Valley including strongman Jack Armstrong, Emile's best fiend Guy Gauvin, a river-driver who couldn't swim, and the notorious Frost brothers, the terrors of the Valley.
