Collection comprises original editorial cartoons, published across Canada, on November 28, 1985, all of which dealt with the perilous situation in drought-stricken Africa. The campaign was instigated, initially, by U.S. organizers Garry Trudeau of "Doonesbury", Charles Schultz, the creator of "Peanuts" and Milton Caniff who drew the strip "Steve Canyon". Syndicated cartoonist Ben Wicks, together with his wife Doreen, orchestrated the Canadian response. All participating newspapers offered free space for clip-out coupons that instructed readers where to send donations. Canadian funds were channeled through African Emergency Aid, a government agency which worked to raise funds for rebuilding projects in Ethiopia, Sudan, Angola, Mozambique, Botswana and Lesotho.

Some of the cartoonists whose works are included in this collection are Guy Badeaux, Josh Beutel, Frank Edwards, Dan Murphy, Roy Peterson and Ben Wicks.

Custodial history:

The Canadian component of this North American demonstration of collective concern for the victims of droughts in Africa was organized by Ben Wicks from whom the original works were received. However, all donating cartoonists signed their own Deeds of Gift, transferring ownership to the National Archives.
