The fonds comprises three series: Joe Plaskett material; Charlotte Mensforth material; and Literary and Shakespearean Readings. The Joe Plaskett series is largely composed of correspondence from the Canadian painter Joe Plaskett to Alice Dexter, exhibition and publicity material, financial records, photographs and a note relating to a painting technique. The other series consist of letters from artist Charlotte Mensforth and related documentation as well as material relating to the Shakespearean reading group to which the Dexters belonged. The photographs are located with the textual records.

Dexter, Alice, 1903-1987 : Alice Dexter was born in Ottawa on September 27. She was an avid art collector and acquired an extensive collection of works by Canadian artists including that of Joe Plaskett. She promoted the careers of Plaskett and other painters, including Charlotte Mensforth, and acted as an intermediary between the artists and potential clients. While living in Winnipeg, she became involved with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Upon her return to Ottawa, she continued this involvement with the cultural world by becoming the president of various organizations such as the Ottawa Philharmonic Orchestra and the Morning Music Club. She was also a member of the National Capital Arts Alliance which encouraged the development of the National Arts Centre. She was married to the journalist Grant Dexter who during the 1950s was the Editor of the Winnipeg Free Press. She died in Ottawa on May 23.
