Sub-series consists of records created and maintained by the Canadian National Railways Operations Division. These records are the product of a selection from the accumulated records of the Operations and Maintenance Department of Canadian National and cover a much wider area than the name would indicate. Some categories are specifications, equipment records, committee reports, details of operations, Royal tours, uniforms, contracts, service and line abandonments or reductions, terminal facilities and agreements for the period 1920-1961.

Volumes 11773-11780 and 14879-14881 contain material relating Royal Trains and visits by royalty, in 1939, 1951, and 1959. Records include correspondence, itineraries, booklets describing various stops in Canada, drawings of train car interiors and temporary platforms, lists of employees, sample menus, a copy of a Canadian National Railways Magazine, and miscellaneous artwork.

Technical drawings consist of 77 technical drawings pertaining to the raising of water levels for the Lost Lake-Lac Seul power development project at Hudson, Ont., and 17 technical drawings for proposed rail-water terminal facilities at Sioux Lookout, Ont. Drawings were prepared jointly by the Division Engineer for CN and the District Engineer for Public Works Canada, and are dated 1934-1935 (RG30M 1996-02716-6). Also included are: six technical drawings prepared by the CN Office of the Engineer of Standards, dated 1927-1944, ranging from drawing number S14C-3.1 to S14C.30.1; one general arrangement drawing for the Silk Car, dated 1928, prepared by the Mechanical Dept. (RG30M 120-000214-8).

Architectural drawings consist of 15 Canadian National Railways prints of proposed round house and other buildings at Limoilou, P.Q. (RG30M 81203/8).

Cartographic material consists of five maps and two profiles of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Deep Waterway Project, dated 1946-1951, published by the Dept. of Transport, and a map prepared by the office of the Chief Engineer, Winnipeg, showing railway lines in western Canada (RG30M 120-000214-8).

Canadian National Railways. Operations : Canadian National Railways Operations, Transportation and Maintenance. In one internal report a major function is identified as Operation, Maintenance and Construction, functions which have to do with all matters relating to the physical operation of the property, such as running of trains, maintaining the property in good condition and the construction of new lines. There appears not to have been an Operations and Maintenance Dept. as such. These functions were carried out under various incarnations of the Operation and Construction Dept., Operating Dept., etc. and later some? of these functions were continued by the Transportation and Maintenance (1960-). 1922-Vice President of Operations, Vice President of Construction. 1923-1948 - Operation and Construction Dept. (Note: name changes to Departments, plural, in 1932. FRENCH: Service d'exploitation et de construction. 1949-1951 - Operating Dept. (FRENCH: Exploitation 1950 & 1955). 1952-1955 - Operation. 1956-1959 Operation. 1960-Transportation and Maintenance. An internal report dated October 16, 1925 states the Vice Presidency of Operation and Construction embraces also Maintenance, and the principal functions of the Department which are termed Sections, each come under the jurisdiction of one of the Chief Staff Officers of the Vice President. Another report dated Feb. 9, 1926 states the Operating Department in Canada embraces not only the conduct of transportation, but the design, construction and maintenance of all forms of rolling stock, tracks and structures of every kind, and in a general way exercises direct control over all of the physical property, so that it is necessarily divided up into sections.....the fundamental divisions of the Operating Dept are 1) operation of trains and conduct of transportation 2) construction, maintenance and operation of track, structures and facilities 3) construction and maintenance of rolling stock, operation of stocks, engine houses, etc. Another internal report, dated June 5, 1946, states the Operation Department is organized on a divisional basis and is headed by the Executive Vice-President. The railway has been divided into geographical units for operating purposes. In Canada, there are three regions, each headed by a Vice-President who reports to the Executive Vice-President. In the United States. The regions are subdivided into districts, each in charge of a general superintendent who reports to the regional Vice-President. The districts are, in turn, divided into divisions. Each division is in charge of a superintendent who is responsible for the actual working forces. The working forces of the operating department are divided into the following categories: administrative, transportation, maintenance and construction. The administrative forces provide the other forces with the means of carrying out their respective functions. RG30 General Inventory.

Custodial history:

Provenance of RG30M 1996-02716-6 is not known. RG30M 120-000214-8 was received in Jan. 1997 from Government Archives Division, RG30, accession 1992-93/215. RG30M 81203/8 was transferred in April 1981 from the Federal Archives Division; its architectural drawings are from RG30, vol. 3080, direct transfer #37, item 590-2, and the map is from RG30, vol. 8273, direct transfer #49, item 15.
