Collection of photographs relating to the life of Alan Gammell dating from the 1870s to the 1920s. One album of photos by Alan Gammell (?) and others concerns the C.E.F. in Canada, England and France during W.W.I. The unit concerned may be Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. A second album of photos by Alan Gammell (and possibly others including unidentified professional photographers) includes views of the construction of power dams on the St. Maurice at Grand'Mère; views of the Laurentide Co. Ltd. pulp mills; and a hockey team from Grand'Mère which travelled to Regina to compete for the 1914 Allen Cup (Gammell was a team member). The fonds also includes seven views of a boys' gymnastics group from the High School of Montreal (of which Isaac Gammell, Alan Gammell's father, was Vice-Rector), ca. 1908; thirteen views of areas in France in which C.E.F. and B.E.F. forces fought, 1916-1918 (photos apparently by British information services, but distributed by F. Wade Moses, Montreal); an interior of a late 19th century domestic living room, probably in the Eastern Townships of Quebec; and fourteen miniature, carte-de-visite, cabinet and portrait sized portraits of Anita Bailey and members of her family, both in Canada and England. The photographers represented include: M.E. Ross (Knowlton, Quebec), Miss S.E. Wood (Knowlton, Quebec), J.A. Wheeler (Cowansville and Knowlton, Quebec), Park Brothers (Toronto, Ont.), A.G. Westlake (Stratford, Ont.), W. Webb (Quebec City, Quebec), J.L. Jones (Quebec City, Quebec). Finally there is a carte-de-visite of Judge Koster, Knowlton, Quebec by Summerhayes & Walford, Montreal, Quebec.

Gammell, Alan : Alan Gammell, businessman. Gammell seems to have grown up in Montreal, where his father was vice-rector of the High School of Montreal. He then moved to Grand'Mère, Quebec, where he played hockey and may have worked either in the lumber industry or in construction. He may have fought in the First World War in France, although his name does not appear in the Canadian Expeditionary Force database.
