Sub-series consists of records created and maintained by the Office of the President, Canadian National Railways System. These records pertain to the tenure of Donald Gordon and include office files (1947-1964), reports (1952-1966), and scrapbooks (1940-1966).

Also includes 10 colour photographs of a plaque ceremony commemorating Donald Gordon's tenure as President and Chairman of CN from 1950-1966 (reg 2002-0889).

Biography/Administrative history:

Gordon, Donald, 1901-1969 : Donald Gordon began his banking career in 1916 with the Bank of Nova Scotia, eventually becoming Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada in 1938. He was named Chairman of the Foreign Exchange Control Board in 1939 and Chairman of the Wartime Prices and Trade Board in 1941. From 1948 to 1950 he served as Director of the International Bank for reconstruction and Development, and from 1949-1966 served as chairman and president of the Canadian National Railway (C.N.R.). Under Gordon's leadership the administrative and financial structure of the CNR was overhauled and new railway technology was introduced.

In consideration of the close ties between the CNR and the City of Stratford, Gordon became a patron of the Stratford Shakespearean Festival in 1953 and later became a member of the Board of Governors for the Festival. He retired from the C.N.R. in 1967 to become president of Brinco and chairman of the Churchill Falls power project.
