European and North American Railway Company : The European and North American Railway Company was originally conceived by the Government of New Brunswick in 1848 as a railway from Saint John on the Bay of Fundy to Shediac on the Gulf of St. Lawrence. In 1850 a conference between representatives of the State of Maine, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick considered the construction of a railway connecting Bangor, Maine with Halifax and Saint John. As a result, two companies were created to build the New Brunswick and Maine sections of this railway, one in Maine and one in New Brunswick, each under the name European and North American Railway Company. The New Brunswick company, which was incorporated under New Brunswick Act 14 Vic. Cap. 1 of March 15, 1851 took over the original scheme of a Saint John to Shediac line. This line was the only one built. Construction commenced in 1853 but financial difficulties halted construction the next year. The company was dissolved and, on July 6, 1856 the New Brunswick government purchased the railway from the contractor and recommenced construction. The line was opened in stages between 1857 and 1860. This 108 mile line was operated by the Dominion government until, under the British North American Act, it was taken over by the Dominion Government at Confederation.
