One oil on canvas portrait of John Andrew Pearson (1867-1940), dated 1936, by Sir Edmund Wyly Grier (1862-1957). According to the donor, Grier was possibly a family acquaintance or friend at that time; it is not known if the painting was commissioned or was offered as a gift to the family.

The painting shows Pearson seated in a chair with his left hand holding a portfolio to the left of his chair. In his right hand he holds a blue-print alluding to his successful career as an architect.

This work is representative of the artist's oeuvre, Grier having painted numerous portraits of politicans, corporate leaders and other notable contemporaries.

Pearson, John A. (John Andrew), 1867-1940 : John Andrew Pearson, architect, was born in England in 1867 and studied at Sheffield. He immigrated to Canada in 1888 and in 1893 was employed by Darling and Sproatt of Toronto, where he became partner and worked until his retirement. The firm is best known for its contributions to Canadian architecture through its bank designs and large office buildings done in the grand classical manner, many of which are located in Toronto. Pearson is perhaps best known for his design work for the new Parliament Buildings and the Peace Tower in Ottawa, which he carried out with associate architect J. Omer Marchand in 1916.

John Andrew Pearson passed away in 1940.

Grier, Edmund Wyly, 1862-1957 : Sir Edmund Wyly Grier (1862-1957) was born in Melbourne, Australia and lived in England and Canada before studying art in Europe. He showed an early interest and ability in drawing. He studied in London at the Slade School of Art under Alphonse Legros, in Rome at the Scuola Libera, and in Paris at the Académie Julien under Adolphe Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury. He exhibited from 1886 to 1895 at the Royal Society of British Artists and at the Royal Academy. In 1891 he returned to Canada to stay, opening a portrait studio in Toronto. Grier won recognition and admission to the Royal Canadian Academy becoming its president in 1929. He painted numerous portraits of politicians, corporate leaders and other notable contemporaries, his first commissioned portrait being in 1888 and his last in 1947. From 1897 to 1903 he served with the Royal Canadian Artillery and became vice-president of the Canadian Military Institute in 1903. He was knighted in 1935. Macdonald, Colin S. Custodial history:

The painting has come from family descent, from the daughter of the sitter, Georgina Agnes Pearson. The donor is Mr. Peter R. Ely who is the nephew of John Andrew Pearson.

Accompanying material note:

On the verso of the painting are two R.C.A. labels identifying the painting with information about sitter and artist. There is also a framing stamp on the verso of the frame.
