Accession consists of one painted portrait of Harvey Reginald MacMillan (1885-1976), dated 1956, by Sir Gerald Festus Kelly (1879-1972). Kelly was an accomplished English portrait and landscape painter, was a member and subsequently president of the Royal Academy in London and is represented in numerous public collections. The painting was commissioned by MacMillan-Bloedel and subsequently given to the sitter's daughter, Jean Southam. The sitter is recognized as a business leader in Canada, particularly influential in the development of the west coast lumber industry. His leadership in the company of MacMillan-Bloedel was the culmination of a long and successful career in the Canadian forestry and lumber export industry, beginning in British Columbia with the establishment of the H.R. MacMillan Export Company. Several offices he held distinguished him as an exemplary civil servant. In 1912 he was Chief Forester for British Columbia until Worl War I, and then Chief Timber-Trade Commissioner for the federal government. By the end of the war he was an employee of the Imperial Munitions Board and the subsequent chairman of the crown corporation, Wartime Shipping Ltd. during World War II. After the war he continued to expand his company, merging with Bloedel Stewart and Welch in 1951. He maintained his interest in MacMillan-Bloedel until his death.

The portrait was originally commissioned by MacMillan-Bloedel and when the company changed hands the purchasing company presented the portrait to MacMillan's daughter, the donor, Jean Southam.
