The collection of photographs documents the career and involvement of Mary Aileen Mason in the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service (WRENS) from 1942 to 1945, as well as documenting some of the reunions with other members of WRENS after the war.

Ms. Mason loved to travel, and visited between 1971 and 1983, Frobisher Bay, NWT; Grise Fiord, Baffin Island; Teslin River, Dawson City, Yukon; Queen Charlotte Islands, Skydegate, Prince Rupert and Victoria, B.C.; Ridley Island; Ellesmere Island; Eureka; Glacier Bay; Fort Garry, Man.; Newfoundland and Alaska. The colour slides are showing mostly scenery and some people activities.

Mason, Mary Aileen, 1914-1999 : Mary Aileen Mason was born in Stratford, Ontario in 1914. She graduated from Queen's University in 1937 with a degree in microbiology and moved to Ottawa to work in government labs. In 1942 she was one of the first women to join the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service (WRENS). With her university education she rose to the rank of lieutenant-commander, working in the area of operational intelligence.

After the war, Ms. Mason returned to the microbiology lab at Health Canada, where she spent several years studying vaccines for whooping cough, then moved on to specialize in anaerobic bacteria. In the mid-1950s she was finally recognized for her work, and became an authority across Canada in her field. Ms. Mason also loved to travel, and visited Russia, Africa, Nepal, Tibet, as well as various locations in Canada, including paddling the Nahanni River. She volunteered for more than twenty years at the Museum of Man, taking groups of children and adults on educational tours of the exhibitions.

She died in August, 1999.
