Rio de Janeiro Tramway, Light and Power Company : The Rio de Janeiro Light and Power Company was a subsidiary of Mackenzie and Mann. On 11 June 1904 a federal charter was obtained in Ottawa for the Rio de Janeiro Light and Power Co. Ltd. Any mention of traction or tramways in the company name was deliberately excluded, so as not to draw attention to the fact that the company's ultimate goal was to seize control of Rio's still-scattered tramway companies. Young lawyers and legal clerks were used to constitute the Rio company's first board of directors. In November it was revealed that the actual promoters of the Rio company included such notables as William Mackenzie and William Van Horne (see The Light, Brazilian Traction, Light and Power Company Limited by Duncan McDonald, p.135). The first board meeting was held in the Blake legal offices (Toronto?) on 13 June 1904. RG30 General Inventory.
