This journal provides a daily record of military events between 6 December 1775 and 7 May 1776 when Americans invaded the colony, trying to wrest Canada from British control. The town of Quebec was then surrounded by troops led by Benedict Arnold and Richard Montgomery. The arrival of British reinforcements in May 1776 caused the retreat of the invaders. The journal presents the point of view of the British defenders.

Although the first pages are missing, it was possible to attribute the journal to Thomas Ainslie, who volunteered for service with the militia and held the rank of captain during the siege by the Americans.

Ainslie, Thomas : Born in Scotland, Thomas Ainslie began his career in Quebec as James Murray's agent in charge of the king's posts, 1760. From 1762 until 1799, he was collector of customs in Quebec. He also pursued a career as a merchant. He retired to England in 1799.
