Interview of Hugh MacKay Ross, author of the book "The Apprentice's Tale", and fur trader with the Hudson's Bay Company for 41 years beginning in 1930 when Ross emigrated from Scotland at the age of 18. Ross recalls his first posting to the company's district office in North Bay, Ontario, his apprenticeship at Grassy Narrows, and his transfer to Minaki, north of Kenora, where he worked until 1941 when he was transferred to Northern Alberta. He talks about his admiration for the Ojibway in Northern Ontario and the Cree in Alberta, especially their love of freedom and their hunting and trapping skills. He recollects the difficulties of learning to drive a dog sled and the wisdom of following only the trails cut through the heavy snow by the natives who know the the hazzards of the terrain in the bush. Ross discusses the detailed records he kept for each native fur trader and the exceptional friendships he developed with the natives who taught him their language. Other topics include his trip to Grassy Narrows to renew old friendships and the keen interest shown by the younger Ojibway who recognized photographs of their grandparents in Ross' book.
