Interview of Gordon Jackson, age 94, who was instrumental in the development of the navy in Canada. He talks about: his service in the Royal Navy Canadian Volunteer Reserve, which was part of the British Royal Navy in the First World War; the duties of the Canadians; the disgruntlement experienced Canadian sailors felt at being given low ranks; Jackson's rapid rise through the ranks because of his success in various officers' examinations; his assignment by the British Admiralty to draft and train Canadian seamen; and his transfer to the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve.~Jackson also talks about the work he did upon his return to Canada. In 1922 the federal government asked him to set up a Canadian Naval Reserve, making Jackson the first commissioned officer in the Canadian Navy. Before that time, Jackson explains, there was no Canadian navy to speak of -- only a few ships on loan from Britain and some British officers. Jackson describes: how he went about organizing a Canadian navy; his appointment as commanding officer of HMCS York, which was actually only a recruiting centre in a building in Toronto and not a ship; his appointment as Dominion Secretary of the Navy League; and the speeches he gave across Canada to build public support for a Canadian navy.~In 1939, Jackson, who worked as a lawyer but had remained in the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve, was asked by the federal government to train officers at HMCS York. Jackson talks about the treatment of Canadians in the British Royal Navy in the First World War and tells some anecdotes about things that happened to him during officers' training at the Crystal Palace in London, England during the First World War. Jackson also talks about a controversy that arose in the 1920s when a newspaper reporter attributed his comments about the need for a Canadian navy to a British officer. The British and Canadian Parliaments criticized the British officer, a Captain [Adams], for interfering in Canadian affairs, but it was actually Jackson who had made the comments.~Jackson also talks about: his participation as a World War One veteran in Remembrance Day ceremonies; a trip to Europe with a group of Canadian war veterans; a conversation with Admiral Jellicoe in Toronto after the First World War, when Jellicoe remarked that he never got over the seasickness experienced on minesweepers and other such vessels; and Jackson's First World War service aboard a converted fishing trawler in the English Channel, on minesweeping and escort duty.~Jackson recalls other things he has done, including working to have Malton selected as the site of the Toronto airport in the late 1920s or early 1930s; his work with the Masonic Lodge, as district deputy Grand Master for the Toronto area; and his position as Chairman of the Board of Mississauga Hospital for 12 years.
