Interview of Sue Lowther, age 97, of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, who talks about her youth in Cape Traverse, P.E.I. and her career as a nurse. Lowther recalls her father's work as a telegraph operator at Cape Traverse where Morse code messages were received from overseas and relayed to district telegraph offices around the province. She also recalls that she and the other children in the family were assisting their father in transmitting messages in Morse code at the age of eight because her father was responsible for incoming and outgoing messages 24 hours daily. When she was dismissed from her job in 1904 as a telegraph operator by a new telegraph director who did not want female operators, Lowther left P.E.I. and persued her medical training and her subsequent nursing career in the United States. She discusses the influenza epidemics in the 1930s and the resulting deaths among pregnant women. She also recalls nursing some patients infected with smallpox during her nursing career which she carried on until her retirement at age 80.
