Interview of Dr. Dan Hill, one of the founders of the Ontario Black History Society, who outlines the history of Blacks in Ontario and the work of the Society. Some of the historical events Hill discusses are: the system of slavery in Upper and Lower Canada in the early 1700s; the Blacks who fled to Canada with the Loyalists in the 1780s; the law prohibiting slavery passed by Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe in 1793; the participation of Blacks in the War of 1812; the Fugitive Slave Act passed in the United States in 1850; and the Underground Railway which secreted runaway slaves across the border. Hill also discusses Reverend King who established a community of former slaves at Buxton, Ontario in 1847, a community which flourished until after the American Civil War when many Blacks returned to the American South to search for lost family members, and the Abolitionist Society of Ontario which aided former slaves. Commenting on how Blacks have been ignored in the context of Canadian history, Hill discusses the work of the Black History Society in researching and publishing articles on Black pioneers in Canada including W.P. Hubbard, a black alderman in Toronto in 1896; Dr. [Abbot], the first black physician in Canada; and other Blacks whose contributions to Canadian society remain largely unrecognized.
