Unedited interview of Hans Polkolm, an early gold prospector in Red Lake, Ontario, and Gus [Forslane], a longtime commercial fisherman from Red Lake. Polkolm, who came to Red Lake from Europe in 1927 when news of a gold strike triggered a gold rush, recalls his bitter disappiontment with Red Lake and its shacks and the harsh winter climate he encountered after travelling 6,000 miles. Determined to leave the following spring, Polkolm stayed on for 50 years. He talks about the frontier town of Red Lake of the late 1920s and early 1930s and describes its many hotels, taverns, dancehalls, gambling joints and the "madams" who made fortunes. Other topics include the few remining buildings in Red Lake from the 1920s - some of which were built from dynamite boxes, the gold strike by the Howey brothers that set off the gold rush, and some of the "characters" he has known in Red Lake. [Forslane], who arrived in Red Lake in 1936, recalls that the frontier town had evolved into a small community as miners, businessmen, and other merchants and their families settled in the town.
