Interview of Kay Gilmour, former superintendent of the St. John's Ambulance Brigade of Canada, who talks about her civil defence work during World War II. To begin, Gilmour briefly outlines the history of the Brigade and its connection to the Order of St. John, the oldest order of chivalry established in 1000 AD when its first hospital was built. Gilmour, who joined the Brigade as a nurse, explains that she realized that Canada was totally unprepared to defend itself in the event of an enemy attack. Discussing her mission to England on behalf of the federal and provincial governments to study civil defence measures, Gilmour was posted to Canterbury where the bombing was at its worst. Upon her return to Canada, Gilmour states that her official report covered every aspect of civil defence including emergency medical care, stockpiling provisions and medicine, emergency housing, and field morgues. Other topics Gilmour discusses are: Canadian nurses with the Brigade who voluntered to work with the exhausted English nurses at the front lines; a description of Gilmour's personal experiences as a nurse at the Battle of the Bulge treating the victims of enemy strafing; and the many medals won by Canadian Brigade members for their wartime service.
