Radio program in a series about contemporary issues in religion. This consists of an interview of Lord Soper, the first non-Anglican cleric to be named to the British House of Lords. Lord Soper was named to the House of Lords in May 1965. Lord Soper comments on the following: socialism as a true Christian form of society, as opposed to Communism or capitalism; his work to help the underprivileged in inner city London, England; social services provided by his church; theology and the notion that "God is dead".~Lord Soper also remarks on the statement by John Lennon of the Beatles that the Beatles are more popular than Jesus Christ. In Lord Soper's view, Lennon would have been better to stick to his guitar, but he concedes that for many people the Beatles are more important to them than Jesus. Responding to a comment that Jesus would have had long hair, just like the Beatles and their fans, Lord Soper remarks that our concept of Jesus as a frail, remote character is false and that Jesus was probably short, squat and bearded.~Lord Soper talks about the decline of Christianity in terms of its administration. Religious institutions are less important than fighting poverty and war. About large-scale prayer-meetings led by evangelists, Lord Soper says that it innoculates people from real religious values and that evangelical movements are substitutes for adult religion. He says that the United States should get out of Vietnam now and that China would not take over Vietnam because China's Communism is nationalistic. In Lord Soper's words, "You don't get rid of Communism by armies. You only get rid of Communism by making it unnecessary." He also says that a commitment to violence has paralyzed those involved in the Vietnam war. The Church should do more to stop the war. Continuing in a controversial vein, Lord Soper wonders how people feel so strongly about the need to protect the unborn, but appear to condone the slaughter of people everyday in wars. The interview ends with Lord Soper's comments about his reputation as a revolutionary, a heretic and an anti-establishmentarian. He admits that he is heretical only insofar as he believes that Christianity will only fulfill itself through "good, old-fashioned socialism".
