General note:

Portraits of Ortelius at the age of 71 and Gemma Frisius at the age of 47.
The Map Division has nearly 15 prints related to Ortelius. Copies of Grisius' map are also in the Map Division's holdings..
The prints were acquired by the Map Division, and then transferred to Picture Division.
In 1570 Ortelius (1527-1598) published "Atlas of the World," the first uniformly-sized, systematic collection of country maps based on contemporary knowledge, i.e. - the first modern atlas. Gemma Frisius (1508-55) also made significant contributions to the history of cartography.
