Third in a series of four interviews with filmmaker Donald Brittain by journalist Brian Nolan. Woven into Brittain's richly-told stories about his prolific and varied filmmaking experiences in the late 1960s and 1970s are references to his personal history of heavy drinking and the overriding creative energy which carried him through difficult periods of his life. The interview opens with a description of his three-year sojourn in Japan and the making of LABYRINTHE ( a multi-screen experimental film for the 1970 Osaka World Fair) and TIGER CHILD. Brittain then recalls his return to Canada in 1973 (to freelance with the National Film Board and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) and his adventures shooting in Australia (THE PLAYERS, 1974), Mexico (VOLCANO: AN ENQUIRY INTO THE LIFE AND DEATH OF MALCOLM LOWRY, 1976) and the United States (SECRET OF THE BERMUDA TRIANGLE, 1977). Other productions mentioned include SAUL ALINSKY WENT TO WAR (1968), STARBLANKET (1973) and THE CHAMPIONS (1978). Personalities feature extensively in this interview, not only as subjects of films (e.g. Ford in HENRY FORD'S AMERICA) but also as participants in production (e.g. Richard Burton who narrates VOLCANO). Also included are accounts of lesser-known projects which foundered before or during production (e.g. GREY FOX) and Brittain's foray into the direction of fiction films (e.g. RUNNING MAN for CBC's FOR THE RECORD series).
